Burglary in central Epsom rose from 98 to 132 in a year, but 94 came from August to January. Since February it is back to last year's level. The figures.

Police recorded 132 burglaries within a mile of Epsom town centre in the year to July 2026. That is up from 98 the year before, a rise of 35%.

Most of that rise came in one stretch. There were 94 burglaries between August 2025 and January 2026, against 57 in the same six months a year earlier. From February to July 2026 the count fell back to 38, close to the 41 recorded in the same months of 2025.

The figures are the Home Office’s street-level crime data for Surrey Police, published on police.uk. The latest month available is July 2026. We compared the 12 months from August 2025 to July 2026 with the 12 months before.

What rose and what fell

Across all crime types the total rose by 3%, from 3,409 to 3,516. Violence and sexual offences remain the largest category by far, at 1,162, or one crime in three.

Crime type Aug 2024 to Jul 2025 Aug 2025 to Jul 2026 Change
Violence and sexual offences 1,122 1,162 +4%
Anti-social behaviour 582 542 -7%
Public order 294 335 +14%
Shoplifting 332 324 -2%
Criminal damage and arson 239 275 +15%
Other theft 216 187 -13%
Vehicle crime 193 170 -12%
Drugs 102 159 +56%
Burglary 98 132 +35%
Robbery 33 44 +33%
All crime 3,409 3,516 +3%

The biggest percentage rise was in drug offences, up from 102 to 159. These are mostly recorded when officers find someone carrying drugs. The count therefore moves with police activity as well as with drug use.

Vehicle crime and other theft both fell by more than 10%. Shoplifting was almost flat, at 324 against 332.

Burglaries rarely end with a suspect

Of the 132 burglaries in the latest year, 95 are recorded as “investigation complete; no suspect identified”. That is 72%. A further 13 are recorded as “unable to prosecute suspect”, and three were still under investigation when the data was published.

The winter burglaries were spread across the town rather than concentrated on one road. No single location in the data accounts for more than eight of the 94. Police.uk places each crime at the nearest mapped point, not the exact address, so street-level counts are approximate.

July on its own

July 2026 had 280 crimes within the mile, down from 317 in July 2025. Violence and sexual offences made up 105 of them, and anti-social behaviour 57. Four were burglaries.

Of July’s 280 crimes, 133 were still under investigation when the month was published.

What the local police team says it is working on

The Epsom and Ewell Central neighbourhood team publishes its priorities on Surrey Police’s site. It currently lists three:

  • anti-social behaviour, especially illegal motorbikes and e-bikes, under Operation Filter, mainly around the Hogsmill
  • shoplifting and offences against shop staff, with plain-clothes officers in repeatedly targeted shops and security jointly funded with Epsom BID
  • violence against women and girls, including Operation Shield patrols by behavioural detection officers

Burglary is not on the list. The team says recent enforcement on the e-bike problem led to the seizure of at least six e-bikes and at least ten arrests.

The council signed a pledge on support for anti-social behaviour victims in August, which we reported at the time.

What it means for you

  • The winter rise in burglary has not continued. Four burglaries in July is one of the lowest months in the two years we checked.
  • The clocks go back on 25 October. Last year’s rise ran from August into January, so the darker months are worth checking locks and lights for.
  • You can report a crime that is not an emergency online to Surrey Police or on 101. Always call 999 if a crime is happening now.
  • The local team can be contacted at epsom@surrey.police.uk, the address it gives on police.uk.

How we counted

We asked the police.uk API for every crime within one mile of a point in Epsom town centre (51.3353, -0.2624), month by month, from August 2024 to July 2026. The area takes in the High Street, the Ashley Centre, the station and the streets around them. Police.uk data is anonymised to nearby points and does not include every crime type, so it is a guide to trends rather than a complete count.
